Vitamins and minerals can be added to fruit juices and fruit nectars.
Regulation (EC) 1925/2006: harmonises the provisions laid down in Member States regarding addition of vitamins and minerals and of certain other substances to foods. Annex I of the Regulation lists vitamins and minerals which may be added to foods. Annex II is a list of the sources of vitamins and minerals which may be added to foods. These 2 annexes have been amended by Commission Regulation (EC) 1170/2009: to include additional substances. Annex III is a list of substances whose use in foods is prohibited, restricted or under Community scrutiny.
The European Commission is supposed to set maximum and minimum amounts of vitamins and minerals which may be added to foods and any associated conditions. Such levels should be based on upper safe levels of vitamins/minerals and intakes of vitamins and minerals from other dietary sources. These maximum levels have not been established yet. The European Commission is still reflecting on a proposal to be submitted to the Member States. In the meantime, Member States may continue to apply existing national provisions on maximum and minimum amounts.
